The Mocean Mate’ Tribe Chronicles from Sasha and Leif

Pennsylvania Adventure By Sasha

As members of the Mocean Mate tribe, Leif and I are always looking to embark upon any and every adventure we can while taking along some Mate to “energize our adventures” and spread the stoke.

Somewhere I have always wanted to go is to Pennsylvania to ride the infamous Posh and Catty Woods BMX dirt jumps. I have grown up seeing these trails in magazines and videos and drooling over the perfectly manicured, endless sea of jumps. Trails like this survive by being kept on the DL, i.e. invite only, no published locations, and respecting the builders and riders.

My friend Josh said he had an in at Posh and Catty, so I jumped at the chance, grabbed Leif, and made the drive. We only had a one-day window but we made the best of it.

Tues. 4pm- We drove down to Josh’s house, gawking at all of the downed trees from the recent snowstorm. We arrived late, got some gross fast food, went back to Josh’s and watched some PA trails videos to get stoked, and passed out. I got the couch.

Wed. 5am- We filled up Josh’s Subaru with bikes, coolers, tools, and hit the road. We drove through CT, NY, NJ, and finally hit PA three hours later.

Wed. 9am- We arrived at Posh and met up with our friend Larry. We unloaded all our gear, hit the grocery store for supplies, and pedaled down to the trails. Upon first sight I was totally blown away: endless intertwining jump lines of all shape and sizes, uphill and downhill, winding in and out of different lines, with totally dialed, glass-smooth steep lips and landings. The amount of work put into building this spot was mind-blowing. We did some raking, watering, and un-tarping before riding. Initially riding each line was like figuring out a maze and laying a mental map in your head- you just had to relax, remember which jump went where, and pull up and nose in as hard as you could on every transition. Josh and I rode every line that was open, while Larry and Leif cruised on the jump line Chillers and another roller-coaster line Qualimente. We literally rode all day, hanging out with the locals once they arrived and finishing off the day with some trains through the bigger sets. The locals were super cool and even allowed us to take some pictures. I can’t thank them enough.

Wed. 6pm- We packed up all our gear into Josh’s car again and hit the local cheap diner. I ate veal, spaghetti, salad, potatoes, cole-slaw, rolls, and dessert for $10. After stuffing our faces, Leif grabbed the wheel and Josh and I passed out in the car.

Wed. 11pm- We arrived at Josh’s, threw our stuff into my truck, thanked Josh, and headed back up to VT. We made it back home by 2:30am, when Leif went to bed to get up and work at 5am the next day and I got up early to hike Mount Washington.

Overall it was a crazy one-day trip that will be extended into a week-long vacation next year. Posh was by-far the best jump spot I have ever ridden. Thank you to Josh, all of the Posh locals, and Mocean Mate for the energy!

Mocean Mate’ Adds Richard Dennis to the Mocean Mate’ Tribe.

We here at Mocean Mate’ are so inspired and driven by the ocean and its surrounding lifestyle. My eyes are still salt encrusted from a fun session in head high surf with 25 MPH winds this afternoon and looking over at Meg with her bloodshot eyes from the same session.

We have been loosely searching for some kindred spirits in the world of surf to represent our brand. We didn’t look for surf contest results or the “up and coming grom”. We didn’t want someone who JUST surfs either. Its important for our Tribe to be well rounded with numerous passions and talents. And we really wanted that person to be from where we surf primarily(North of New Hampshire).

Well the search has ended and we are so stoked to announce our newest Tribe member, Richard Dennis to all of you! Richard is a Maine surfing and shaping legend that is just as handy with a pair of drumsticks, a paintbrush, snowboard and being a mentor and instructor as he is shaping amazing boards for his brand, Timber Island Surf Co or styling in the plethora of waves available worldwide. Welcome to the Tribe buddy!

The Mocean Maté Tribe is here!

For immediate release
January 1st, 2011
By Mocean Maté (Megan Walsh & Skye Nacel)
www.moceanmate.com
moceanmate@gmail.com

Mocean Maté has started a team of brand ambassadors, called “The Tribe”, to help promote a healthy drink as well as happiness, healthiness and an adventurous spirit. Five new members were added to the original team members, Sasha Yakovleff and Will Castle who are at the “Bro/Ho” level and receive the highest level of support. The new members start out at the “Grom” level and will have a chance to move up based on their hard work and dedication to helping people “Energize Their Adventures”.

Members of The Tribe are chosen not just for how hard they shred but how hard they work to spread the stoke by coaching, mentoring, trail-building, land and ocean stewardship, and most importantly a great attitude and commitment to well roundness, as well as by spreading the word on positive movement, adventure and living lives fully 365 days a year.

The Mocean Maté Tribe consists of the following Stoke Masters:

Sasha Yakovlef: Alstead NH. A driven mountain biker and freestyle skier currently studying recreation management at the University of New Hampshire. He rips it on his bike in dirt jumping, street, park and slopestyle and was our first team member chosen back when we launched in July of 2010. An avid skier hitting both park and pipe and also coaching and mentoring aspiring youth in mountain biking, skiing and living life positively and fully!
Sasha will be shredding it on his bike along with others at The Mill Jam 2011 on January 22nd from 5pm-8pm in Bellows Falls, VT.  Private Warehouse + Lots of Ramps = Fun Times!

Will Castle:  Derby VT. This talented kid keeps active and happy by charging downhill on his mountain bike,  playing the upright string bass, Nordic skiing and racing, trail building, and by being an assistant teacher of natural resources and forestry as well as competing in lumberjack competitions.  You’ll find him Nordic racing all winter and this summer he’ll be busy ripping it up and maintaining the downhill bike trails at Burke Mountain and preparing for college to study Adventure and Outdoor Education so he can keep people inspired!! Will is one of our original team members and is entering in the Craftsbury 50k cross country ski event this January on the 29th.

Patrick Kell:  Moretown VT. A dedicated mountain biker, Patrick is the executive director of the Vermont Mountain Bike Association.  His mission includes keeping people and the environment stoked, active and healthy by riding bikes and by tirelessly maintaining the trails in order for them to do so.  During the winter Patrick gets out and shreds hard on his snowboard 30-45 days a season with a huge infectious smile and has began planning next years Vermont Mountain Bike Festival.

Scottie Raymond: Hailing from Burlington Vermont, Scottie is a talented emcee, artist and athlete who is also very involved in community while raising two beautiful girls and working on his new solo LP that will be tentatively released in 2011. Scottie will also be adding his artistic skills to upcoming Mocean Maté projects.

Dylan Conte:  Still in high school in Stowe, Vermont but wise beyond his years, this crazy guy doesn’t stop between mountain biking (downhill, 4x/DS, slopestyle and dirt jumping), ice hockey, snowboarding, long boarding, and just being addicted to fun.  Look for Dylan to qualify for the World Cup and compete for the Gravity East Series title for Jr. X in the 2011 season!!

Leif Trott: Newark, VT.  Leif is a mountain biker,x-country skier, dirt biker and artist who is also a talented bike mechanic and trail builder that recently helped build the new trail, “Knight Slayer” at Burke Mountain and will be continuing with those efforts in 2011.

Joe Fox: St Johnsbury VT. Joe is in charge of the recreation department for the town of St Johnsbury which is a perfect fit for the talented snowboarder, skier, musician, runner and father of two who regularly creates events promoting health and adventure including this years “Mad Dash’ which was an intense mini adventure race held in the woods of St Johnsbury Vermont.

We generally handpick our members but if you think you might have what is takes to help people Energize Their Adventures feel free to drop us a line and tell us why at

Wake Up with Mate!!!

Starting the day off with Mate was what started this Mocean Mate mess for Skye and I.  We are fun lovers and so we wanted to wake up and get to it with pure, healthy energy!

The nutritious stimulant.  Yerba Mate is loaded with 24 vitamins and minerals, including:

B vitamins:  B’s are crucial in the proper metabolism of carbs, fats AND proteins thus providing the    body with energy while supporting the immune system and are neccessary for normal functioning of the nervous system…think good attitude/positive mood/lots of energy…what more do you want!

Carotene:  Antioxidant!  Simply put, helps to stamp out the bad stuff inside you that attacks the good stuff.

Potassium: Is a very important mineral for the proper functioning of all cells, tissues and organs in the human body.  Enough said!

Magnesium:  It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Chromium:  Helps stabilize blood sugar, crucial to avoid highs and lows of energy.

And that’s not even all of them.  Mate is also loaded with amino acids and rich in antioxidants.  So why not wake up with all of that!  Ditch the coffee and go for yerba mate…a better alternative to coffee as it provides the same vitality and mental clairty without the jitters, plus you get all the vitamins and minerals which makes the caffeine boost last longer and NO CRASH!

That is why we ranted and raved about this stuff for so long and why we wanted to turn it onto you.  Yerba Mate is   an acquired taste by itself, it’s been described as bitter, grassy, and earthy…to some that sounds appealing but to most…not so much.  That’s why we decided to create Mocean Mate, a delicious way to get yerba mate into you along with a bunch of other good stuff to keep you adventuring!  .

Mocean Mate was born for fueling life’s adventures, whatever that may be. Sick of “energy drinks” that seem an oxymoron. What good is a drink if its all filler, not killer? We crash enough on our bikes and boards, we don’t need our fuel to make us crash.  Yerba Mate is the main ingredient in Mocean Mate and it may be the perfect drink! But don’t just take our word for it.  As noted by The Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society, “It is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value” and that yerba mate contains “practically all the vitamins neccessary to sustain life”.

And perhaps most significant is the reported lack of “coffee crash”, which has been particularly of interest to athletes and performers, who cite Mate’s sustained energy without the hard crash at the end; this is likely the result of lower caffeine content combined with calming amino acids and muscle-fueling nutrients, helping athletes both mentally and physically without an extreme jittery high (and resulting crash) that can occur from coffee and those silly, so-called energy drinks!

Yerba mate has helped millions of people lead healthier, more energized lives. Mocean Mate is helping many people (soon millions!) enjoy yerba mate and thus lead healthier, more energized lives.  Once you try it, we think you’ll agree.

Tasting at Las Olas Taqueria in Exeter NH Friday Nov 12th High Noon

We are rocking and rolling here with some solid surf rocking the coast that we have been chasing and continue to do so moving into the weekend. So we scheduled a tasting at our friends Matt and Julies new joint, “Las Olas Taqueria” in Exeter NH.(they also have a new one in Hampton.) The places are going off and their hard work is paying off.

We will be there tomorrow at lunch time so come over and try some amazing mexican food and some latin american based energy tea. Try out both flavors and grab a sticker and shoot the breeze, share a surf story etc. Check out their website here..http://www.lasolastaqueria.com The food is absolutely amazing. Get the pork bowl and tell em’ Skye sent you.

We are stoked to be so involved with our retailers. We do tastings and support events but we also make a point to buy stuff we need from them. This week alone we have bought necessities from 5 of our retailers and its only Thursday. That is supposed to be how it works in a Buy Local, Support Local economy so give that some thought the next time you hit a box store to save 75 cents. But thats just my 2 cents so take it for what its worth.

Below are some shots of me surfing at one of my favorite points in New England which is north of Rhode Island and south of Nova Scotia..(Oh at Mocean Mate* we do NOT name spots so don’t bother to ask, just go explore and find your own private mecca!)  Shots were taken by the lovely Evangelyn Morse on a beautiful 38 degree February day.
